Climate change and the imperative of energy security are driving the search for next-generation advanced batteries that outperform current Li-ion technology. These next-generation batteries are expected to offer high energy density, superior cyclability, and are based on abundant and renewable materials. My research covers various aspects of advanced batteries, including cathodes, anodes, electrolytes, and catalysts, especially carbon electrodes, which are crucial for these advanced batteries, such as Li-O2 batteries with the highest theoretical energy density. However, conventional point-to-point, material-to-performance research often fails to provide reliable guidelines for the rational design of these electrodes. To address this challenge, I propose a new approach called the Carbon Materials Genome (CMG). This new paradigm represents a significant advancement in interdisciplinary research by combining innovations in material synthesis, in situ characterization systems, theoretical exploration, and data management. My goal is to develop a CMG for advanced batteries that can accurately model the complex interplay between material properties, performance and reaction mechanisms. This initiative aims to advance scientific research and contribute to the enhancement of global energy systems. |
