  • Field of Research: Advanced Basic Science
  • Research Topic: Animal profiling and imaging

Can you describe the research you are doing now?

I do experiments on cell culture, molecular biology (PCR, molecule isolations), animal profiling, and imaging. I am using R programming language and would like to have someone who can augment our coding in Python as our work is bioinformatics heavy.

What role do AA students play in this research?

There is one AA on our team who does everything.. RNA/DNA extraction, surgery, organization, statistic work, etc. First, I would train and evaluate AA students to see if they have a good learning curve, and I do expect failure out of the first tries of the experiment. In my lab, AA students can do most of the work if trained properly. Sometimes there is so much work to do that AAs have to join lab students in their work or else the work will not be finished.

Can you tell me about any progress or achievements of research with AA students?

The students presented a poster, and they can confidently take over the project as future lab students and lead the project in a certain direction if they want to when they graduate. A major point for having AAs on the team is networking and getting to know other people. For the professor, it provides a teambuilding experience.

Are there specific values you emphasize to find the right person for the job?

Students need to be motivated, and they need to come prepared. For example, if next week we are doing RNA extraction, students need to prepare for the background knowledge of it. It is also important for students to know their capabilities and not be afraid of asking questions when needed.
