FRIS Fund for Early-CareerIndependent Researchers

The world is full of great discoveries yet to be imagined. 世界は、見えない大発見であふれている。

It is unlikely that humanity 100 years ago could foresee scientific
developments of today: a world where information is
exchanged via PCs and smartphones, traveling
at high speed by bullet train or airplane,
and humans living in space stations. Similarly, the world
we see today is merely the tip of an iceberg, beneath which must
lie a wealth of great discoveries yet to be imagined.

The Frontier Research Institute for Interdisciplinary Science
(FRIS) was established at Tohoku University to pioneer and
promote research that transcends disciplinary boundaries and
contribute to the development of a rich human society. A research
environment where researchers with broad-ranging specialties,
especially early-career researchers with fresh sensibilities,
can come together to integrate their ideas and discover new
knowledge is also rare by national standards. There is no
restriction of fields of study, research themes, or norms.
We believe that such an environment, which allows researchers
to take a leap in the dark, is what is needed to produce the
great discoveries that will move human society forward.

Chemistry amongst the leaders of the next
generation will surely be a creative force in
the next 100 years. We invite those who
are ready to step forward with us.

FRIS (researchers from various fields) ×
CoRE (environment allowing them intensive interaction)
=Expanding the frontier of
 human knowledge

Organisms have evolved in diverse ways, through their interactions with the natural environment and other species. Likewise, we believe that diverse researchers will grow when they are given an environment where they can go beyond their respective disciplines by interacting with researchers from other fields. We also believe that new, richly diverse strands of science will bring about a variety of innovations.

What is special about FRIS, Frontier Research Institute for Interdisciplinary Sciences, in the context of Japan is that it is an institute that brings together early-career independent researchers from all over the world, and from wide-ranging specialties, a place where diverse researchers co-exist and interact with each other.

The basic goal of this fund is to create new, richly diverse strands of science through synergy between FRIS and CoRE. What FRIS aims to realize is "CoRE," an environment where those diverse research seeds "thrive together" through continuous mutual stimulation. CoRE, which stands for Cooperative Research Environment, enables routine interdisciplinary exchange by providing experimental facilities for a wide range of fields under one roof.
