Title Reverse Translational Research into the Neural Mechanisms of Intergenerational Transmission
Priod 2025-2026

Intergenerational transmission describes the process by which parental traits influence offspring’s traits through genetic and/or non-genetic pathway. For instance, parental psychopathology has been shown to increase psychiatric risk in offspring. Intergenerational neuroimaging has been expected to elucidate the mechanism of this phenomenon. Several studies have shown the structural brain similarities among parent–offspring pairs using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

However, brain MRI provides limited information at the cellular level. To elucidate the neurobiological significance of parent–offspring brain similarity, we will conduct both neuroimaging and histological analysis of mouse brains following a cross-fostering experiment.

This interdisciplinary, reverse-translational study is being undertaken by a developmental cognitive neuroscientist (Izumi Matsudaira) and an infectious disease specialist (Fumi Murakoshi), with the aim of expanding our research horizons through this program.
