Research Outline

With the ever-expanding library of two-dimensional (2D) materials, van der Waals (vdW) magnets have attracted extensive interest as an ideal platform for exploring fundamental problems of magnetism and their potential spintronic applications. These vdW magnets enable the creation and manipulation of novel magnetic states through effective coupling with external perturbations such as light, strain and moiré patterns. Further exotic quantum phases are also expected to be revealed in these materials and their homo- and heterostructures, such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect and quantum spin liquids.

The goal of my research is to investigate nontrivial spin states and quantum phases in magnetic vdW homo-/heterostructures, particularly focusing on the noncollinear spin states and spin excitations (e.g., magnon and skyrmions) in moiré magnets and their heterostructures, which may find applications in next-generation memory and information devices. To probe the magnetic states and quantum phases, my research will employ two primary experimental probes: 1) Optical methods including magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) microscopy/Raman spectroscopy/photocurrent, et al.; 2) electronic transport including magnetoconductance/Hall conductance in planar devices and electron tunneling conductance in vertical junctions.
