Research Outline

Movement of intracellular molecules is a critical factor for cellular functions. Although recent advances in live-cell imaging technologies have allowed us to visualize such motion, it is often difficult to precisely quantitate it due to technical issues with standard approaches that can detect “mean behavior” of “numerous” molecules.

We recently developed a novel method allowing us to understand cellular systems based on the “dynamic state” of molecular movement utilizing high-precision nano-imaging of “single” molecules in live-cells. With this approach, we speculate that 1) each intracellular dynamic state has its own ordered systems, 2) cellular responses result from transitions in the dynamic state induced by various stimuli, and 3) derangements in the establishment and/or in the transition in the dynamic state are directly linked to cellular dysfunctions and disorders. Our research goal is to create novel frameworks for understanding cellular functions based on the dynamic state of individual molecules by taking advantage of various cutting-edge live-cell imaging technologies and by interdisciplinary collaborations with researchers in other fields, including information technologies and material sciences.
